Financial Literacy Resources for the General Population

Canadian Bankers Association – Your Money
Your Money is the financial literacy program of the Canadian Bankers Association. Teachers can register online for an in-class seminar presented by a banker volunteer from their community. Parents can access resources to help teach their children financial literacy at home. Resources on this site are developed by banks. Resources for children include some interactive games.

Canadian Foundation for Economic Education

Virtual Advisor
The Virtual Advisor website is designed to help individual Canadians find answers to the questions they have about money and work issues. Community Sector Council NL – MONEY project
A project of the Community Sector Council of Newfoundland and Labrador, MONEY (Many Opportunities Not Experienced Yet) will explore new ideas and adapt proven methods to help meet the financial literacy needs of economically disadvantaged people in NL. MONEY will compile information on financial literacy programs and providers in NL, what works, what does not, who is being served, who is not, what methods people feel comfortable with, what the barriers are, how to break them down and whether people realize they have a need.

Financial Consumer Agency of Canada
An independent body working to protect and inform consumers of financial products and services. The FCAC was established in 2001 by the federal government for oversight of consumer issues and for consumer education in the financial sector. The FCAC website offers downloadable learning modules for facilitating workshops, information – including fact sheets, consumer alerts, research, glossary and newsletters – and tools and calculators.

Financial Workshop Kits: Family Money Skills workshop (USA)
Created by USA-based National Endowment for Financial Education, this workshop provides the tools to help families openly discuss money matters and gain the critical life skills needed to make smart financial choices. Success is heightened when parents and children learn together and support one another in making smart, beneficial money decisions. Key content includes understanding wants versus needs, setting savings goals, earning money, shopping wisely, planning, and banking. Note, not all the information will apply to the Canadian context.
